Geneva Convention for the internet privacy?

The United Nation has a privacy chief and his name is Joseph Cannataci and he has called for a Geneva Convention on Internet Privacy. Here is the article in question: http://goo.gl/8Xbvm3

The UN has called on governments to respect the right to privacy especially as governments intrude more and more on individuals and companies. The cited example was the NSA spying on the UN.

Cannataci singles out the UK for spying on its own citizens especially with the number of CCTV's now.

However it is not clear how a Geneva Convention on Internet Privacy will make things better. It is hard enough for citizens and business to understand and know their rights and duties under existing regulations. This is only complicated with the impending EU Data Protection Regulation.

Because data is intangible there is still along way to go for companies to see it as an asset owned by the individual and given in good faith to the organisation to use fairly and legally and to look after it securely for the original owner, you and I!

Maybe a Geneva Convention will have more teeth especially when tackling governments and large multi-national organisations. It may also finally help remove the plethora of rules and acts across the world, many conflicting with each other.

This is only the start and in many ways a much-needed debate to get duties and rights around personal information and privacy off the group.
